I can’t believe how many places we hear about the benefit of routine from. We get inundated with ‘How to organize your life’ messages and ‘plan your self care routine’ ads.
That’s great and all, but what about spontaneity? Surprises? Just switching your plans cause you feel like doing something else in the moment?
Sometimes, we get so caught up in building the best routine, that we forget to live and just be open to the experience of joy and aliveness.
I recently had an experience of this in my own life. It was a Thursday, a normal work day, and I was sitting with my coffee, looking at my To Do list. I was feeling kind of bummed that I didn’t have many massage clients booked in this week, but was making up for the lack by planning to catch up on some other projects I’ve had on the go for awhile.
All of a sudden, I was inspired to get up and dance! And not just dance in my normal way, but put my jade egg in (down there) and dance with it inside me.
My first thought when this idea popped into my head was, ‘ugh, that sounds like a lot of work’. But it wouldn’t go away, and so I put on some music and went upstairs to insert my egg.
Beginning to move was hard at first. I had a million reasons why I should just stop.
I had lots of work to get on with
It was almost lunch time
My body felt tired
I just felt silly doing this in the middle of a work day
I knew I should keep going a little bit, I have learned that resistance is often something worth working through, and so I kept moving. About 20 minutes into the dance, I began to feel my pelvis come alive. Maybe the jade egg had something to do with that, but the feeling was pleasurable. It made me want to see what was possible if I let my body build that energy.
So I danced and moved some more, I got down on the floor and moved in a different way. I let myself explore whatever my body wanted to do. My clothes began to feel restrictive and I longed to feel naked and free, so I moved my dance into my treatment room (it has no windows) and kept dancing.
I realized as I lost my inhibitions, that I haven’t really let myself go in awhile. You know, life and routine becomes normal, and we forget how to be spontaneous. Even our ‘self care’ becomes routine, to the point that we get bored!
Boredom is anti-Pleasure, I think, it kills our buzz. When is the last time you really let yourself go? Even our sex life can end up being boring, we do the same thing, in the same position, week after week. Where is the fun in that?
Relationships can also die of boredom, too much adhering to routine can dull the excitement of being with another amazing human being.
So my challenge to you is, take a break from routine! Leave work early, go somewhere different, try a new experience. Enliven yourself.
Pleasure is found on the other side of boredom. Let’s explore together.
